Honoring Women’s Voices: Five Must-Read Books for Women’s History Month
Women authors have a way of capturing emotions, revealing vulnerabilities, and telling stories that resonate across generations. Their words inspire, challenge, and affirm, offering wisdom that transcends time. This Women’s History Month, I’m highlighting five books by incredible women whose stories and insights have deeply moved me.
1. Walk Through Fire: A Memoir of Love, Loss, and Triumph – Sheila Johnson
Sheila Johnson, co-founder of BET and the first Black woman billionaire, shares a story far beyond success. Her journey reflects Langston Hughes’ famous words, “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” Through trials, resilience, and faith, she embodies Romans 8:28—how all things work together for good. Her life reminds us that challenges aren’t meant to break us but to refine us.
2. Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand in the Sun and Be Your Own Person – Shonda Rhimes
The mastermind behind Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy, How to Get Away with Murder, and Bridgerton shocked me with her honesty—despite creating some of TV’s most powerful characters, she was an introvert gripped by fear. In Year of Yes, she challenges herself to step outside her comfort zone, say yes to the unknown, and embrace life fully. Her storytelling brilliance shines through every page, making this book both entertaining and transformative.
3. Becoming – Michelle Obama
My forever First Lady, the epitome of grace and resilience. In Becoming, Michelle Obama opens up about her journey—from the South Side of Chicago to the White House—revealing struggles, triumphs, and everything in between. Her story mirrors the experiences of so many Black women in America, making this book an essential read and a legacy I hope to pass down one day.
4. Finding Me – Viola Davis
Viola Davis is a master of her craft, pouring raw authenticity into every role. In Finding Me, she shares her journey through poverty, struggles with self-worth, and the fight to heal. Her story is a powerful testament that it’s never too late to grow, to heal, and to step into the fullness of who you were meant to be.
5. All About Love – bell hooks
One of my top five books of all time. Before reading All About Love, I hadn’t given much thought to what love truly means, how it manifests, or the ways it shapes our lives. bell hooks eloquently explores love in all its forms, making this book rich, thought-provoking, and a must-read. If you pick just one book from this list, let it be this one.
